Most of the time a stump grinder does the whole job: it takes the stump and its exposed roots below the lawn. Full removal, which takes the entire root system, is for jobs where something is built or planted exactly where the stump is.
Grinding is enough when
- You want to mow, seed or lay sod over the spot.
- You are planting a tree nearby, or in the same spot after a deeper grind.
- You want the lowest cost and least mess.
Go further when
- A foundation, pool, septic component or fence line goes where the stump is.
- The root system is lifting a walk or driveway.
- You are clearing the ground down to bare soil.
What full removal costs you
Stumps are like icebergs: underground they can be 3 to 4 times the size of the part you see. Taking the entire root system costs more, and the yard is dug up a lot more. We explain that before we start.
