The short answerStump removal means getting the whole stump and its roots out of the way. We do it by grinding all the way down, including the entire root system if you want it. That costs more and disturbs the yard a lot more than a standard grind, so we talk it through with you first.

Exposed roots or the whole root system

A standard grind takes the stump and the exposed roots 6 to 9 inches below grade. For full removal we take the entire root system. Stumps are like icebergs: underground they can be 3 to 4 times the size of what shows above.

Taking the whole root system costs more, and the yard is dug up a lot more. We explain that before we start so there are no surprises.

When digging out is better

Digging a stump out instead of grinding is usually recommended for hard-to-reach areas, steep inclines and very rocky ground. If your stump is one of those, we will tell you before any work starts. Depending on the scope of the work, Robert does the digging himself or brings in a partner.

What you get

The stump and the roots you chose are out, and cleanup is done before we leave. Big stumps leave a lot of material, so we talk about where it goes first. Rocks, metal, chicken wire and fences in the roots cannot be ground.

Common questions

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chips the stump and the exposed roots down below the surface. Removal means the stump and the entire root system are taken out, which costs more and disturbs the yard more.

Can you grind a stump that has rocks or metal in it?

No. We cannot grind rocks, metal, chicken wire, fences and similar things in the roots. Tell us if you know of any.

Can I plant a tree where the stump was?

Yes, after a deeper grind with the chips cleared out. Tell us when you book.

What customers say

“Had Stump N' Grind out to regrind 6 stumps that were originally ground by the tree company who removed the trees. The company who removed the trees did not grind the stumps properly, and all of the roots were left and were hazardous to the ankles and my mower. Robert arrived on time, explained in detail what he was going to do, and gave an up front cost. He performed all the work in a professional and clean manner and cleaned up the areas when he was done.”

“Found Robert on Facebook, messaged him about removing 5 stumps from my yard. He responded quickly and asked for pictures. He gave me a quote and then two days later he showed up when he said he would and efficiently removed my stumps. Very fairly priced and the job was done with no issues.”
