The short answerStump grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutting wheel to chip a stump and its roots down below ground level. The result is a pile of wood chips, not a hole. A 12 inch stump usually takes 5 to 7 minutes, a 24 inch stump 10 to 18 minutes, and a 36 inch stump 20 to 40 minutes. Times vary with the tree species, the mound, the roots and the lay of the land.

How a stump gets ground

We check how the machine gets in and out, where the stump sits relative to fences, septic and buried lines, and how far the roots run. Then the grinder sweeps its 20 inch cutting wheel side to side, stepping down each pass until the stump is below grade.

A remote-control tracked machine means the operator stands clear of it. That is how it reaches stumps tight against a house, a retaining wall, or a creek bank. The grinder can cut about 2 feet below ground, depending on the grade.

How deep and what's left behind

The standard grind is 6 to 9 inches below grade. We can go deeper if you ask, for example to plant a tree in the same spot. We also talk with you about the roots: grind only the exposed roots, or the entire root system. Taking the entire root system costs more, and the yard gets dug up a lot more, so we explain that before we start.

What's left is a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. It's good mulch for beds. We can also rake it back into the hole or spread it. Hauling it off is available for an added fee, quoted per job.

What to do before we come

Clear the area around the stump of toys, furniture and hoses. Tell us about anything buried: gas, water, electric, cable, invisible dog fence, irrigation, drain lines, a septic field. If there are underground utilities at the address, we call 811 before work starts so the lines get marked out. Private lines are not marked by 811, so point those out to us.

Common questions

Do you take out the roots too?

We grind the exposed roots as standard. If you want the entire root system out, say so. It costs more and the yard gets dug up a lot more, because stumps are like icebergs: the roots underground can be 3 to 4 times the size of what shows above.

Can you grind a stump near my house or fence?

Usually yes. The tracked, remote-control machine narrows to 35 inches and the operator stands clear of it. We check access when you send photos.

How long does it take?

On average, a 12 inch stump takes 5 to 7 minutes, a 24 inch stump 10 to 18 minutes, and a 36 inch stump 20 to 40 minutes. Each job varies with the species (birch, oak, cedar, ash), the mound, the roots and the landscape.

What happens to the wood chips?

They stay as mulch, or we rake them into the hole. Hauling chips away is available for an added fee, quoted per job. Say which when you book.

What customers say

“Had Stump N' Grind out to regrind 6 stumps that were originally ground by the tree company who removed the trees. The company who removed the trees did not grind the stumps properly, and all of the roots were left and were hazardous to the ankles and my mower. Robert arrived on time, explained in detail what he was going to do, and gave an up front cost. He performed all the work in a professional and clean manner and cleaned up the areas when he was done.”

“Found Robert on Facebook, messaged him about removing 5 stumps from my yard. He responded quickly and asked for pictures. He gave me a quote and then two days later he showed up when he said he would and efficiently removed my stumps. Very fairly priced and the job was done with no issues.”
