Stump N' GrindCall

How much does stump grinding cost in New Jersey?

It depends on the stump, and the fastest way to a real number is a photo.

The short answerStump grinding is priced mostly by the stump's diameter, plus a minimum charge for showing up. Number of stumps, access, species and roots move it up or down. Text a photo and you get a firm price before anyone comes out.

What changes the price

  • Diameter. Measure straight across the top at its widest. The volume of wood grows with the square of the width, so a stump twice as wide takes about four times the grinding.
  • Number of stumps. Setup is a big share of a small job. Several stumps in one yard cost less each than separate visits.
  • Species. Oak, hickory and locust dull teeth. Pine and poplar grind fast.
  • Access. Gates, slopes, stairs, walls and tight spots take time. The grinder narrows to 35 inches and is tracked and remote-controlled, so it reaches most of them. Tell us about anything in the way.
  • Roots. A standard grind takes the stump and the exposed roots. Taking the entire root system costs more, and the yard is dug up a lot more.
  • Depth. The standard grind is 6 to 9 inches below grade. Deeper, for planting a tree in the same spot, is something to ask about.
  • Cleanup. Leaving chips is cheapest. Hauling chips away adds a fee, quoted per job. See what to expect after grinding.

Why we do not post one number

Two stumps of the same width can take very different work depending on the roots, the ground and the way in. That is why Robert asks about the address, how many stumps, their rough size, access and underground utilities, then quotes from photos or a visit. The quote comes before any work starts.

How to get a price in two minutes

  1. Take one photo of each stump with a tape measure, a boot or a shovel beside it for scale.
  2. Take one photo of the path the machine would take in: gate, slope, anything it must pass.
  3. Text them to 973-841-4971 with your town, or use the form.

Customers describe a quote the same day and the work a day or two after. See what they say on the reviews page.

Is it cheaper to grind or to remove?

Grinding costs less than full removal and is enough for most lawns and gardens. See stump removal for when the roots have to come out too.
