How a stump grinding job works
From the first text to the last rake stroke, in seven steps.
The short answerYou text or call, send photos, get a quote, and pick a date. We text the night before and again when we are on the way. Most stumps take well under an hour once the machine is set up.
- You call or text. Tell us about the stump. On the phone Robert asks a few things: the address, how many stumps, the rough size of each, whether the machine can get to them (stairs, fences, walls, bridges, pools), and whether there are underground utilities like gas, water, electric or cable.
- Photos or a quick look. Send a few photos of the stumps and the way in, or set a time for Robert to stop by and look.
- You get a quote and a timeframe. Once we have what we need, you get a quote and a date range for the work.
- 811 marks the lines, if needed. If there are underground utilities at the address, we call 811 before the work starts so the lines are marked out.
- You approve and we schedule. When the invoice is approved, you get a set date and time. The night before you get a text reminder with an estimated arrival time. The morning of, you get a text when we are on the way.
- We set up and grind. We tell you we are pulling in, unload the machine, pick the best way to work, and set up safety barriers around the area. Please stay indoors while the grinder runs. Then the work begins.
- Walk-through and cleanup. When the work is done we show you the result and make sure you are satisfied. We finish by talking through how to get grass growing where the stump was.
How long the grinding takes
On average, a 12 inch stump takes 5 to 7 minutes, a 24 inch stump 10 to 18 minutes, and a 36 inch stump 20 to 40 minutes. Each job varies with the species (birch, oak, cedar, ash), the mound, the root system and the landscape.
How we protect your yard and your family
- Robert takes the most direct route to the stump, with as few hard turns as possible, to protect the lawn.
- He tells you when he arrives and asks everyone to stay indoors while the machine runs.
- Safety barriers and shields go up around the work area to block small rocks and debris.
- With underground utilities on site, 811 is called first.
The machine narrows to 35 inches. See the grinder specs or common questions.
