Stump N' GrindCall

Can you plant a tree where a stump was?

Yes, you can plant a new tree where a stump was, but the spot needs more prep than a lawn does. Tell us before the job so we plan for it.

Ask for a deeper grind

The standard grind is 6 to 9 inches below grade. A new tree has roots that need loose ground, so ask us to go deeper.

Clear out the chips

Wood chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they break down, which starves new roots. Take the chips out of the hole and fill it with clean soil.

Roots left behind

A standard grind takes the stump and the exposed roots. The roots further out stay in the ground and rot slowly. If you want the entire root system out, say so. It costs more and the yard is dug up a lot more.

Or plant nearby

Many people plant a few feet away and let the old spot settle. Either works.
