After grinding, the stump is gone and what is left is a mound of wood chips mixed with soil. It is not a hole, though the ground can settle as the buried wood rots.
Three ways to handle the chips
- Leave them as mulch. They are free mulch for garden beds, just keep them off tree trunks.
- Rake them back into the hole. The chips pack down, so top off with clean soil.
- Haul them away. This is the cleanest, and it is available for an added fee, quoted per job.
Grass, flowers or a new tree?
For grass, remove most of the chips, add topsoil, seed and water. For a new tree in the same spot, ask for a deeper grind and skip the chips: wood chips pull nitrogen from soil as they break down, which starves new roots.
Will it settle?
It can. The buried chips and roots rot slowly, so the spot may sink a little. Add soil and reseed as needed. More in what to expect after grinding.
