Stump grinding is priced mostly by the stump's diameter, with a minimum charge per visit. The bigger and harder the stump, the longer the cutting wheel has to work. Most companies in New Jersey quote a per-inch rate measured across the stump at its widest point, then add or subtract for the job's conditions.
What moves the price
- Diameter. Measure straight across the top, at its widest. Twice the width is roughly four times the wood, so a 30-inch stump costs far more than a 15-inch one.
- Species. Oak, hickory and locust are hard on cutting teeth. Pine and poplar grind quickly.
- Number of stumps. Setup is a big part of a small job. Five stumps in one yard cost much less per stump than five single-stump visits.
- Access. Gates, slopes, fences and tight spots take more time. A tracked remote-control machine reaches most of them.
- Roots. Large surface roots add width to the cut. Say if you want them chased out.
- Cleanup. Leaving the chips is cheapest. Hauling them away adds time.
Why a photo gets you a better price than a phone call
A photo with something for scale, a tape measure or a boot, tells us the diameter, species clues and access in one look. That is why customers who texted pictures describe getting a firm price before anyone came out.
